Telling stories about science

National Science Week is underway. It was launched officially by Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb at the Queensland Museum at lunchtime.  An audio file of Ian Chubb’s remarks is attached.

There are a couple of propositions I’d like to put up about science and the communication of science.

First, there is a great story to tell about the investment of government (both state and federal) in scientific research and development;

Secondly, many scientists are ill-equipped to tell their own stories, let alone the broader narratives about science; some are even afraid of putting their head above the parapet.

Thirdly, the credibility of science is under threat, and it is not good enough for scientists to say: “It’s all the media’s fault”. It’s not. Scientists are responsible too.
